Angliru Legacy Organic T-Shirt

The Alto de l'Angliru is one of the most demanding mountain climbs in professional cycling. Initially an unpaved cattle path in the Asturias region of Spain, the ascent was converted by adding a lick of Tarmac, thus creating a brutal challenge for the riders of the 1999 Vuelta a España. The inclusion of the climb in that year's Spanish Grand Tour revitalised interest in the race, with spectators enthused by an obstacle that rivalled the severity of climbs such as Mont Ventoux in the Tour de France and the Mortirolo in the Giro D'Italia.

The two-wheeled mission that the Angliru presents is undoubted. Its 12.5km length and over 10% average gradient is stiff enough, but it's the last 6km of the climb that sets it apart. These final kilometres have a terrifying average rise of 13% and include the ramps of the Cueña les Cabres section that max out at a thigh crushing 23.6%.

Thanks to its severeness, the Angliru always creates intrigue and controversy within the Vuelta and has extracted remarkable performances from the professional cyclists that toil up its slopes. José Maria Jiménez was the first winner on the Angliru in 1999, dedicating his win to the late Marco Pantani. Other notable winners include the great Alberto Contador in 2008 and 2017 and Italian Gilberto Simoni in 2000.

The fastest ever ascent of the Angliru goes to Roberto Heras, who recorded an unbelievable time of 41'55" for the entire 12.5 kilometres. In contrast, David Millar created a commotion on the climb in 2002 by stopping short of the finish line at the top of stage 15 in that years Vuelta, unpinning his number and handing it to the race officials in protest at the difficulty of the stage. He was subsequently disqualified from the race and later apologised to his team and fellow riders for his outburst.
