The Tour of Flanders race has provided spectators with intrigue and excitement since its inception in 1913. It's for this reason that crowds flock in droves to cheer on their favourite riders and consume gallons of the local ales amongst a festival-like atmosphere. Each rider is encouraged heartily, especially up the many bergs and across the frequent cobbled sections on the route, where the racing is often so demanding and technical that fatigue induced pauses are a regular sight.
A real war of attrition, De Ronde provides a survival-of-the-fittest scenario, with riders finishing alone or in very small groups, pale-faced and hollow, utterly exhausted from their efforts. Although it is an accolade often reserved for multiple winners, any rider completing the race thoroughly deserves to be considered a " Lion of Flanders".
