Paris-Roubaix, also known as “the Queen of the Classics” or “the Hell of the North” is a brutal spring time race set in Northern France. Famous for the rough cobblestone sections that it traverses and the often adverse springtime weather under which it is run the race is a war of attrition and is regularly won via a survival of the fittest type scenario.
Ever since its inception way back in 1896 the race, as its name implies, has started in or nearby Paris and has finished in the small northern French city of Roubaix. The race was created by two textile manufacturers from Roubaix, Théodore Vienne and Maurice Perez, who had recently built a new velodrome and were brainstorming for ways to increase its publicity. They hit upon the idea of holding a race from the world famous capital of France, Paris, all the way to their new venture. After much organising, aided by the help of the national daily sports newspaper “Le Velo”, a route was planned, prize money was offered up and the race was born.
With the finish always residing in Roubaix and with the race founders inhabitants of the city the race is often fittingly and fondly known purely as “Roubaix”. The current finish line is on the Vélodrome André-Pétrieux, which is actually a different track to the founders original construction. This present velodrome finish, used since 1943, is iconic with some of the most famous riders within the history of the sport, including Merckx, De Vlaeminck, Coppi, Kelly, Moser, Boonen and Cancellara all being triumphant on its boards.
