The Passo Dello Stelvio in the Northern Italy is one of the most iconic climbs within the sport of cycling. Frequented by the Giro d’Italia the Stelvio has welcomed some of the sports most famous riders with its length, gradient and rarified air helping to provide some historic racing spectacle.
Residing within the Eastern Alps, this once vital mountain pass was originally constructed in the early 1820s to link the former Austrian Province of Lombardy with the rest of Austrian Empire. Covering a height gain in the vicinity of 1800m and doing so via seventy five hairpin bends the Stelvio Pass is something of a construction triumph, particularly for the time in which it was founded. Nowadays with the Austrian border pushed north and with more convenient and quicker mountain routes now available the Stelvio serves more as a tourist route but one that is fantastic for road cycling and indeed the route of the Giro d’Italia.
First visited by the Giro in 1953 when a young Fausto Coppi triumphed, the Stelvio has fascinated the sport of cycling ever since. With an elevation of 2757m it is the highest ever Grand Tour mountain top finish. This geological prominence also often provides inclement racing conditions that, although brutal for the riders, only seem to add to the undoubted aura that this mountain naturally exudes.
