Upon leaving the village of Bédoin, as you start your assault on the famous southern slopes of the Ventoux, you’d be forgiven for questioning the fabled climbs fearsome reputation. As you roll through pleasant vineyards and olive groves at a very manageable 4-5% average gradient you’re feeling like a champion. You picture yourself as the almighty Ventoux slaying, yellow jersey wearing hero as you pedal with surprising fluidity. .
But after around five of these easy kilometres everything becomes a little sour. It’s at this point that you reach “Le Virage Saint-Estève”. This is an important marker of the climb as it’s basically where it becomes no longer enjoyable. As you round this bend the gradient changes very much for the worst. The pleasant circles that you have been pedalling since Bédoin all of a sudden morph into rather choppy squares. Your shoulders become tense and hunch, your head dips and slants to one side, all combining to ultimately present you as Quasimodo on a bike.
At this stage, you take your last glimpse of the observatory tower that sits waiting at the summit. Until now it has been a ghoulish companion, constantly watching over you, searching for any weakness, but at Saint-Estève it disappears as you vanish into the forest. For the next nine and a half kilometres the gradient is a relentless 9 - 10 %. It never lets up, it never forgives, it never allows a period of respite. As your sinews strain and your hopes start to drain you wonder if you’ll ever see the observatory tower again or if your fate is to be consumed by the forest of Ventoux.
