There are three on-road ascents of Mont Ventoux. The southern ascent that starts in the village of Bédoin is undoubtedly the most popular and has been made famous by the Tour de France peloton clambering up its gradients during several different editions of the race. This southern road is the side that the Tour de France organisers prefer as its length, vicious slopes, and natural atmosphere combine to guarantee a racing spectacle. From the time it forced Merckx into an oxygen mask, through to the famous Armstrong-Pantani battle and Froome's comical run-without-a-bike, the southern side of the Ventoux always creates intrigue and excitement.
The first time Mont Ventoux was included within the parcours of the Tour de France, way back in 1951, it was actually tackled from the northern side. Starting in the village of Malaucène, arguments between locals have never been settled over whether this side is more demanding than the oft-used Bédoin ascent to the south. Both sides are inseparable regarding length and elevation gain, but they differ very much in character, with the Malaucène climb being much more of a laddered, irregular affair versus the Bedoin ascent's more regular profile.
The third on-road climb up Mont Ventoux is undoubtedly the easiest but is still an exceptional ride. Beginning in the village of Sault, the road meanders through vast lavender fields before reaching the forest that covers much of the mountain. The slopes are never terrifying through the forest, allowing a fast, consistent pedalling rhythm, and on hot days the air is tainted with the smell of sun-baked cedar trees. Finally, the road joins the southern ascent at the Chalet Reynard intersection and climbs across the famous lunar landscape to the summit.
