There are three on-road ascents of Mont Ventoux. The southern ascent, that starts in the village of Bédoin is certainly the most popular and has been made famous by the Tour de France clambering up it’s gradients during fifteen different editions of the race. This is the side that the race organisers seem to prefer as it guarantees to provide spectacle due to it’s severity and indeed the aura that it naturally generates. From the time it forced Merckx into an oxygen mask through to the famous Armstrong-Pantani battle and Froome’s comical run-without-a-bike the southern side of the Ventoux always creates intrigue come race day.

However, the very first time Mont Ventoux was included within the parcours of the Tour de France, way back in 1951, it was actually tackled from the northern side. Starting in the village of Malaucène arguments between locals have never been settled over whether this side is actually harder than the oft-used Bédoin ascent. Both sides are inseparable with regards to length and elevation gain but they differ very much in character with the Malaucène climb being much more of a laddered affair verses Bedoin’s easy start, severe middle, severe end pattern.

After much spilt pastis the argument rages on to this day. Despite this, as the searing pain in your legs refuses to abate and a metallic note taints your palate during your toil on either ascent I can guarantee that any brasserie conflict is very much tucked away in the depths of one’s consciousness.
