Inspired by the vast promotional success of the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia, Juan Pujol of the Spanish daily newspaper “Informaciones” instigated the Vuelta a España to increase its circulation. This first race was held in 1935 and saw just fifty ambitious, two-wheeled entrants battle over 14 stages and 2100 miles across mainland Spain.
Despite brief pauses due to the Spanish Civil War, World War II and precarious economic situations, the race has battled through adversity to be held annually since 1955. As a result, it has become one of the most anticipated races of the season and is one of the most demanding thanks to its always challenging topography. Past winners, including Anquetil, Poulidor, Ocaña, Merckx, Hinault, Delgado, Kelly, Ullrich and Contador are just some of the riders who have elevated the race to a vintage quality with some breathtaking performances.
